TDE Artist Reason Announces Departure From Label After 7 Years
Looks like Top Dawg Entertainment is parting ways with one of its artists.
California rapper Reason recently announced that he was leaving the iconic music label after 7 years of partnership.
Reason, real name Robert Lee Gill Jr., 33, shared that he decided to leave Top Dawg Entertainment in a message posted to his social media accounts earlier today (Tuesday, June 18th). The statement read:
“The Last 7 years have been incredible, and I’ve appreciated all the time and experiences that have come within that span of time. I can’t even put into words the surreal feeling I’ve had of being able to share my thoughts, expressions, emotions, stories, and experiences with you all through the platform provided to me by Top Dawg Entertainment.”
And continued:
“I want to give a huge thank you to Top himself, not only for giving me a chance to live out my dream but also for hearing me and understanding my decision to travel a different path after the years. There’s truly no words for the amount of respect I have for you, and that’ll never change, no matter what.”
Reason went on to thank all the fans and musicians who’ve embraced him along the way, adding that he’s grateful for the experience and excited for what’s to come. Though he’d been working with TDE for years, Reason first signed to the label, which helped launch the careers of superstars such as Kendrick Lamar and SZA, back in 2018. The partnership came after the musician had released several popular independent mixtapes and was featured on the TDE-produced The Black Panther Soundtrack.
Reason publicly discussed his frustrations with TDE in an interview last August, alleging that the label wasn’t supporting him in the ways he needed to be. TDE’s co-president Anthony “Moosa” Tiffith Jr. called into the interview, however, arguing that he didn’t understand where Reason’s complaints were coming from. In a subsequent interview a few months later, Reason claimed that the two apologized to one another, adding:
“I’m still signed to the label. I just think s**t’s just delicate…I don’t know what the f**k it is. To me, it’s all weird. I don’t really know what the situation is. I’m still signed to the label right now.”
It does not appear anyone from Top Dawg has commented on the matter publicly at this time.
