Social media has been buzzing with conversation about the video since it dropped yesterday (July 4th). In the 5:54 project, Kendrick Lamar, who had been spotted out in Compton filming from the video leading up to its release, performs the summer anthem surrounded by dozens of the cities residents. He also dances alongside the hit single’s producer DJ Mustard and his video co-director/manager Dave Free.
Elsewhere in the video, Kendrick Lamar treated fans to a rare cameo from his longtime fiancé Whitney Alford and their children Uzi and Enoch. If you recall on the song “Family Matters”, Drake alleged during his rap beef with Lamar that he and Whitney Alford were separated and that his fellow rapper hadn’t seen his kids in months. The couple appear to be dispelling the claim, however, seeming perfectly in sync dancing to the chat topper for the music video.

Social media users went on to cause Alford and Lamar to trend while reacting to her appearance and the video in general. Many commenters praised the move and discussed how it further cemented Drake’s loss in the battle. Others shared how they were just impressed by Alford’s dance moves.

Lamar also included a few direct nods at Drake, beating an owl piñata and looking down on an owl locked in a cage in different parts of the video. Both are references to Drak’e music label OVO, who’s often represented by the bird.
