TDE’s Punch Seemingly Tells Story About Diddy Threatening J. Cole ‘I’ll Cut Your Throat’ Amid Fight Over Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Control’ Verse
Diddy’s infamous 2013 fight with J. Cole has resurfaced once again.
Punch, the President of Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) record label, appeared on the latest episode of Tank and J. Valentine’s R&B Money podcast where he participated in their “I Ain’t Saying No Names” feature.
For the segment, Punch told an all-too-familiar story about Diddy and J. Cole getting into a brawl after the MTV VMAs in 2013. This time, however, he had to leave out names due to the purpose of the game.
He began,
“The homie just did this song, right? Piss the gang of people off. Everybody was mad at it.”
The “homie” he was allegedly referring to was Kendrick Lamar, who had just called himself “the King of New York, King of the Coast,” in his verse of Big Sean’s “Control.”
Punch continued,
“When the song came out, he was overseas, then he came back to the States. First place we stopped in was New York City and the first thing we do is say, ‘Let’s go to the club’ because we want to check the temperature, see what everybody was on—L.A. stuff.”
Based on previous accounts, this all took place at an afterparty following the VMAs. Punch added,
“We get to the club. One of the homies approached us and talking about this particular record. So we’re going back and forth, ‘Oh, it’s not personal. It’s just this, this and that. It’s cool, whatever, whatever.’”
“Another one of the homies walk up, he look drunk [and] said, ‘Yeah, y’all n***as need to go back and forth and keep it on wax or whatever, whatever, whatever.’ So the two dudes who approached, they get into a little back and forth, little argument with each other now. What we didn’t know is they got into an argument before we got there.”
The two dudes he’s seemingly talking about are J. Cole and Diddy.
Punch said things then quieted down before they moved to a VIP section of the club, which he said was full of A-list celebrities like
“the front row of the Grammys.”
Without naming names, he added that one of the two who were fighting earlier (allegedly J. Cole) was sitting near him when the second man (allegedly Diddy) approached and threatened to cut J. Cole’s throat with an alcohol bottle.
“The homie that got into it with the other one, he’s sitting two steps down from me on the couch. Then they came back to him, the ones who got an alteration earlier. He was like, ‘Yeah, and if you ever say what you said to me earlier, n***a, I’ll—’ and he grabbed a bottle from the table cause he got all of the alcohol. And he said, ‘What you gon’ do? Hit me on my head with a bottle?’ ‘Like nah, I’m gonna break [it] on the table, I’m gonna cut your throat.’”
They then got into a fight, which included knocking over a table full of alcohol, before they were escorted out of the star-studded venue.
This isn’t the first time Punch has told this story. Which is why many believe they know exactly who he’s referring to. See him give his account of the incident back in 2022 with names included. Interestingly enough, he said back then it was Emory Jones, Jay-Z’s longtime friend and Head of Lifestyle at Roc Nation, who won. He jumped into the fight thinking that someone was attacking Jay-Z, who was also present. He pulled them away before realizing J. Cole, who was Roc Nation’s first artist, was involved.
