Jaleel White Recalls Being Told To Wear Looser Pants On ‘Family Matters’ To Hide His ‘Bulge’
Jaleel White isn’t holding back in his new memoir Growing Up Urkel.
According to the U.S. Sun the child star recalled feedback he got from network execs during his time starring as Steve Urkel on Family Matters.
Although he was a teen when he first landed the role, he was over 20 years old by the time the show reached season 8, and the higher ups started to direct him to make changes.
Jaleel White said he was told,
“Let’s get rid of the suspenders. Lower his pants, too.”
“Oh and…It’s getting a bit uncomfortable watching him in tight jeans. There’s a, uh…bulge.”
The actor said when he got to college, he was “peeling” himself out of the tight Urkel clothes “like a banana.”
He also noted that it was so difficult to keep up with Urkel’s signature high pitch voice, that he almost quit the series. However, he stayed on until it was canceled after nine seasons.
