Mom Forgets Giving Birth To Triplets After Being Declared “Clinically Dead” During C-Section
Marisa Christie, a 30-year-old mother from Texas, faced a rare and life-threatening complication after giving birth to triplets during a planned cesarean section. The delivery took place in August at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center North in Houston.
Christie suffered an amniotic fluid embolism, a rare condition where amniotic fluid or fetal material enters the bloodstream, causing her heart to stop. Her anesthesiologist, Dr. Ricardo Mora, told TODAY.com that Christie was “clinically dead” for 45 minutes following the incident.
Christie described the moment her heart stopped:
“The doctors had pulled all three [babies] out. Actually, they were resting them on my stomach to do a delayed cord clamping. My arms flew up, and that was when my heart stopped.”
Dr. Mora added,
“She essentially lost what we consider her whole blood volume. We replaced her blood volume. So, for 45 minutes, she was clinically dead.”
Christie spent a week unconscious. When she woke up, she learned about the birth of her baby girls, but she had no memory of the event. “I was terrified,” Christie said about not remembering the birth.
Despite the terrifying experience, Christie and her babies are recovering well after this rare and intense medical emergency.
