Vybz Kartel Renounces His Past Skin Bleaching Routine
Vybz Kartel has announced he will never bleach his skin again, explaining that his previous decision was rooted in self-love, though he acknowledges it was influenced by deeper issues within the Black community. Speaking on Hot 97, the dancehall star, who was released from prison in 2024 after serving 13 years, reflected on his past skin-lightening practices.
He initially saw it as a way to showcase his tattoos, but now recognizes it was connected to the desire to meet Eurocentric beauty standards. “It was about trying to look a certain way, but looking back, I see it differently,” Vybz Kartel said, emphasizing the internal struggles many Black people face with their identity. He pointed to the lasting effects of Eurocentrism and slavery.
Despite defending his choices in the past, including controversial Instagram posts, he firmly stated he would not engage in bleaching again.
