LL Cool J Sets The Record Straight On Rumored Battle w/ Jay-Z In NYC Club In Resurfaced Clip: ‘I Ran Out Of Rhymes’
In a resurfaced clip that is going viral again, LL Cool J addressed the rumor of him battling Jay-Z in the early ‘90s, clarifying what really happened during that encounter.
In the July 2024 interview with Charlamagne Tha God, LL Cool J explained that it wasn’t a serious battle, despite what many believed.
“First of all, I didn’t rap a verse from ‘Funkadelic Relic.’ That’s bullsh*t,” he stated. LL Cool J recalled Jay-Z trying to grab his attention by flashing money, leading to a friendly exchange of rhymes with Jay-Z’s associate Sauce Money. However, LL admitted, “I was out of rhymes, b. In no scenario was I fully loaded and ready to rhyme.”
He also mentioned being heckled by Jay-Z’s entourage but emphasized that he wasn’t prepared for a battle.
“Do you really want that? You dudes want those problems?” he quipped. LL Cool J’s subtle rivalry with Jay-Z is well-documented, particularly during Hov’s Def Jam presidency.
