Michelle Obama Speaks On Returning To Therapy Amid New ‘Transition’ In Life: ‘Every Choice I’m Making Is Completely Mine’
The importance of therapy during life’s major transitions isn’t lost on Michelle Obama.
In a candid conversation on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast last month, our forever First Lady revealed that she’s currently back in therapy as she navigates a new chapter of her life. She shared:
“At this phase of my life, I’m in therapy right now because I’m transitioning, you know?”
Speaking about life after her time in the White House as the wife of former President Barack Obama and mother to their two daughters, she continued:
“I’m 60 years old, I finished a really hard thing in life with my family intact. I’m an empty nester. You know my girls are in — they’ve been launched. And now for the first time, as I’ve said before, every choice I’m making is completely mine.”

She added:
“I now don’t have the excuse of, ‘Well my kids need this,’ or ‘my husband needs that’ or ‘the country needs that.’ So how do I think about this next phase, and let me get some help.”
Michelle, who’s been a vocal advocate for mental health over the years, emphasized the importance of addressing what’s been left unspoken.
She noted that therapy is helping her “unwind some old habits” and “work through some old guilt that I’ve been carrying around.”
In previous interviews, Michelle opened up about her newfound freedom and the empowerment she feels in making choices solely for herself, including her decision to skip Donald Trump’s inauguration earlier this year.
