The WNBA is thriving!
On Monday (June 30), WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced that, over the next five years, the league will expand to 18 teams, with Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia set to join by 2030. Sharing the exciting news, Engelbert said:
“The demand for women’s basketball has never been higher, and we are thrilled to welcome Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia to the WNBA family. This historic expansion is a powerful reflection of our league’s extraordinary momentum, the depth of talent across the game, and the surging demand for investment in women’s professional basketball.”

According to reports, if all goes according to plan, Cleveland will make its debut in 2028, Detroit in 2029 and Philadelphia the following season. This would mark a return for both Cleveland and Detroit, as both cities previously had WNBA teams. Reports indicate that the Detroit and Cleveland teams will play at NBA arenas, while Philadelphia has plans for a brand new facility.
