Florida To End Certificates Of Completion For High School Students w/ Disabilities
Florida is changing how students with disabilities exit high school.
The state Board of Education recently voted to phase out certificates of completion, which were previously awarded to students with disabilities who couldn’t meet diploma requirements. Under the new rule, these students will leave school without any formal recognition.

Amy Van Bergen, former head of the Down Syndrome Association of Central Florida, warned that the change could limit opportunities after graduation: “Without that certificate, they are potentially going to lose eligibility for all sorts of opportunities after high school, whether that’s even taking a college placement test or pursuing developmental or vocational programs.”
The Florida Department of Education, however, says the focus will now be on alternate pathways to earning a high school diploma.
