Former NBA Star Terry Rozier Hit With New Federal Bribery Charges In Gambling Case
Former Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier is facing new federal charges tied to an ongoing sports gambling investigation.
According to a superseding indictment filed Thursday in federal court in Brooklyn, prosecutors have added charges of bribery in sporting contests and honest services wire fraud conspiracy against Rozier. The new allegations stem from claims that he accepted a bribe to leave a March 2023 game early while playing for the Charlotte Hornets.
Federal prosecutors allege Rozier conspired with gamblers to exit the game while citing a lingering leg injury, allowing bettors to cash in on wagers that his points, assists and other statistical totals would fall below sportsbook projections. Prosecutors claim more than $250,000 was wagered on those outcomes.
Court documents allege Rozier was initially set to receive a $100,000 bribe, but the amount was later reduced to approximately $70,000 after he recorded four rebounds during the game, causing some of the bets to lose.
Rozier has denied participating in the scheme and previously pleaded not guilty to wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy charges. His attorney pushed back on the latest indictment, arguing that prosecutors are simply advancing new theories in an effort to keep the case alive.
The new indictment was filed the same day sports bettor and influencer Marves Fairley pleaded guilty to federal charges connected to gambling schemes involving basketball games in the United States and China. Prosecutors say Fairley admitted to using insider information to gain an advantage when placing bets.
Rozier remains free on a $3 million bond as the case moves forward.
