(EXCLUSIVE) Ex NFL Star Darren Sharper Pleads with Judge to Enter Drug Abuse Program While Serving 18 Years in Prison
theJasmineBRAND.com exclusively reports, ex-NFL star Darren Sharper is pleading with the Federal Court judge – who sentenced him to 18 years in prison for allegedly drugging and raping multiple women – to allow him to him to complete a 9-month drug abuse program while locked up in prison.
Here’s the latest: On August 23rd, Sharper’s legal team filed docs explaining the ex-NFL star is requesting the court place him in the residential drug abuse program while he is in prison.
He explains that he would benefit from placement in the drug program while serving his 18 years in prison. He is pleading for the court to recommend to the Bureau of Prisons that he be placed in this program during his federal incarceration.
The prosecution has not objected to his request. The program is the Bureau of Prison’s most intensive treatment program and the offenders live in a unit separate from the general population and all participate in half-day programming and half-day work, school or vocational activities and lasts about 9 months.
Here’s the backstory: This month, the judge threw the book at Sharper and sentenced him to 18 years in prison for committing crimes against more than half a dozen women in 4 different states.
The judge ignored the plea settlement that the prosecution and Sharper had negotiated earlier this year, which had him only serving 9 years for allegedly drugging and raping women in Arizona, California, Nevada and Louisiana. However, he will only serve around 85% of his sentence, ending up with 13 years in jail, before any credit for time earned.
During the sentencing, Darren told the judge,
I’m still trying to figure out why I made some of these choices… I lived my life right for 38 years, then I took this path.
He was accused of using the sleeping aid Ambien, before allegedly sexually assaulting or raping his victims. The former professional athlete has been in custody since February 2014 and will be given credit for time he has served awaiting sentencing.
The official charges were conspiracy to distribute the sleeping aids and intent to commit rape and two counts of distributing these substances with intent to rape. He will also have to complete 3 years of supervised release after he is released from prison and pay a $20k fine.
