J.Cole & Wife Secretly Welcome Child + His Take On Rap Beefs, Conventional Success
J.Cole Talks Conventional Success, Taking Jabs At Rappers
In a recent interview, J.Cole opens up about how he now has a new perspective on what life and success both mean. He’s confirmed that his high school sweet heart Melissa (whom he is married to) recently welcomed their first child. However, he declines to share the sex of the child or name. Personal life aside, check out a few excerpts below.
Recognizing that there’s more to life:
The other side, it’s what we grow up believing that we need and want. It’s everybody’s dream. Who doesn’t want the pick of the litter on this, that and the third? Money, women, cars. And beyond all of that — which I really wasn’t into — praise. It’s addictive. To recognize it, it was the first step. I had to recognize, well, where’s the fear coming from?
Not being satisfied with conventional success early in his career:
Any reasonable person would be ecstatic. I didn’t have that feeling. Trying to prove that I could do something that they don’t think I can, it was a very sad place when I look back.
Rappers taking jabs at other rappers:
That speaks to the state of us as a people. For so long my mind state was, I have to show how much better than the next man I am through these bars. Who’s the best? Let me prove it. And it’s just like, damn, I’m really feeding into a cycle of keeping black people down, I’m really feeding into that.
Over the weekend, HBO premiered its latest documentary on J. Cole. called 4 Your Eyez Only, featuring his process of making last year’s album of the same name. Click here to find out when it re-airs.
