Kanye West’s Set Designer Addresses Lorde’s Accusations Of Stealing
Over the weekend, Lorde accused Kanye West and Kid Cudi (Kids See Ghosts) of stealing her set design during their performance at Tyler the Creator’s Camp Flognaw festival.
The set design included a floating cube above the stage, a stage set that Lorde used back in March. In a series of Instagram stories, Lorde compared Kanye and Cudi’s set to hers. She wrote:
I’m proud of the work I do and it’s flattering when other artists are inspired by it, to the extent that they choose to try it on for themselves. But don’t steal — not from women or anyone else — not in 2018 or ever.
Kanye and Lorde happen to share a set designer, Es Devlin, but Devlin did not work on Kanye and Kid Cudi’s Camp Flognaw set. For their set, Kanye and Kid Cudi enlisted John Mcguire of Trask House, who says Lorde’s floating cube stage is not original.
Lorde wasn’t the first person to use a floating glass box, she won’t be the last. She doesn’t own it, her designer didn’t invent it. Cubes and floating aren’t new to Kanye West, stage design or architecture. A quick google of floating glass box brings up many instances of suspended glass cubes.
Trask House also worked on West’s floating Saint Pablo stage. It has also been pointed out that Justin Bieber, David Blaine, Kendrick Lamar and more have also worked similar setups into their stage design.
At this point, does Lorde owe Kanye an apology? Let us know in the comments.
