Aretha Franklin’s Son Lashes Out About ‘Respect’ Biopic: The Franklin Family Does NOT Support The Movie + Calls For Boycott
The son of late legendary singer Aretha Franklin is not feeling the biopic about her life!
The trailer for MGM’s Respect film was released last month, and Kecalf Franklin had lots to say about it on social media.
Kecalf Franklin, who goes by Eradesent Views, went on a rant about the film Saturday (Jan. 4). He said that none of Aretha Franklin’s family members were contacted about the film, or a forthcoming book The Queen Next Door.
“ONCE AGAIN….. THE FRANKLIN FAMILY (DOES NOT) SUPPORT THE MOVIE THAT IS IN PRODUCTION!!!!! NOR DO WE SUPPORT THE BOOK “THE QUEEN NEXT DOOR”!!!!! NEITHER ENTITY FELT THE NEED TO CONTACT THE (CORE) FAMILY ABOUT ANYTHING!!!!”
He questioned how anyone can move forward with telling Aretha Franklin’s story or even use her family’s images, without speaking to her family.
“HOW CAN YOU MAKE A MOVIE ABOUT A PERSON AND NOT TALK TO THE PERSONS SONS OR GRANDCHILDREN ABOUT IMPORTANT INFORMATION? HOW CAN YOU PUT A PERSONS FAMILY (IMAGE) IN A BOOK AND NOT ASK PERMISSION?”
He then called for a boycott of the projects.
“IF YOU ARE A “REAL” FAN OF MY MOTHERS….PLEASE DO NOT SUPPORT THIS. ASK YOURSELF….WOULD YOU WANT THIS DONE TO YOU?”
Interestingly enough, he added that the only thing the film got right is respecting Aretha Franklin’s wishes for Jennifer Hudson to portray her in the biopic.

“(side note: the “ONLY” person my mother was in favor of for the movie was JENNIFER HUDSON. period. Everything else is being done against our wishes) (please share)”
He signed the status,
“THE “REAL” FRANKLIN FAMILY (sons and grandchildren)”

The filming for the movie began last fall. Jennifer Hudson shared a moment from the set.

She previously said of portraying Aretha:
“It’s always been my dream to play Aretha, and it’s actually happening. It blows my mind. I’ve always looked up to Aretha and to portray her—I cannot even speak about it because it’s like, ‘Oh, that’s a huge task.’”
