Syleena Johnson Says Fans Should Still Enjoy R. Kelly’s Music Amid Accusations Against Him: People Shouldn’t Find Themselves Responsible For His Actions

While R. Kelly is in jail awaiting trial on child pornography and other related charges, singer, “Sister Circle” host and former “R&B Divas” star doesn’t want his legal woes to stop fans from enjoying his music.

It’s no secret R. Kelly had hit after hit before being arrested and charged last summer. And Syleena Johnson, who worked with the disgraced singer for her earlier hits like “Guess What” and “I Am Your Woman” said his loyal listeners should keep tuning in without feeling bad about it.

She told Page Six,

“I don’t think people should find themselves responsible for his actions because they love his music. During that time when you heard that music, you were in a pure place where you received something lyrically that inspired and motivated you. Hold on to that. That’s not your fault that he created this …”

She then compared his library to that of movie exec Harvey Weinstein, who recently faced trial after several women accused him sexually assaulting them, and Bill Cosby, who’s currently behind bars after being convicted for sexual assault.

“So if we can’t listen to [R. Kelly’s] music, [then] we can’t watch another Harvey Weinstein movie. We can’t watch none of Bill Cosby’s shows.”

She continued,

“God created these people. They are still created by the Lord. He also designed them to put those good things in the world. Whether they are attached to these terrible things … that’s not our responsibility.”

R. Kelly’s trial is set for late April, but it could start later as he was indicted on similar charges earlier this month. 

His lawyer, Steve Greenberg, came against the new indictment Monday (Feb. 17) on Twitter.

“We are aware of the superseding indictment. We continue to fight for him and look forward to the day he is free #notguilty #rkelly“
