‘Law & Order: SVU’ Episodes To Cover COVID-19 & George Floyd Death
“Law & Order: SVU” is living up to its “ripped from the headlines” reputation.
The long-running police drama is no stranger to touching on viral news in episodes, and the recent COVID-19 pandemic and the death of George Floyd will be no different.
Showrunner Warren Leight said of the series covering George Floyd:
“There are ways, we will find our way in to tell the story. Presumably, our cops will still be trying to do the right thing but it’s going to be harder for them and they’re going to understand why it’s hard for them.”
He also confirmed that the coronavirus and how it impacted New York City would be a topic of conversation in the upcoming 22nd season:
“We’re going to reflect New York in the pandemic. What happens to someone who is sexually assaulted during the height of the coronavirus outbreak.”
He went on to salute Mariska Hargitay’s character, Olivia Benson.
“(We) can’t make every episode about a bad cop. Olivia makes mistakes . . . but she’s empathic, which is I think what separates the cops on our television show from a lot of what we’re seeing these days on our livestreams.”
He added that they’ve brought on new writers in an
“effort to bring in new voices, fresh voices, different voices.”
Interestingly enough, the series is also gearing up for a spinoff. It was recently in the spotlight as Dick Wolf, the brains behind the “Law & Order” franchise, fired one of the writers for threatening California looters on social media.
Craig Gore shared a photo of himself on his porch amid curfews being in place in L.A. and wrote the comment:
“Sunset is being looted two blocks from me. You think I won’t light motherf*ckers up who are trying to f*ck w/ my property I worked all my life for? Think again,”
Dick Wolf quickly released a statement that he was fired.
