Rihanna & Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey Donate $15 Million To Mental Health Services, Communities Of Color & LGBTQ Youth

Singer Rihanna 32, and Twitter CEO, Jack Dorsey, 43, are partnering again to donate millions of dollars in relief funds to those affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

This time, however, the duo will focus their contributions to organizations in Newark, NJ, and Chicago. Through Rihanna’s Clara Lionel Foundation and Jack Dorsey’s #StartSmall initiative, they will be sending more than $15 million to

“organizations focused on addressing mental health issues, food insecurity, income loss and the needs of individuals excluded from federal stimulus programs in Newark and Chicago.”

The official statement by Clara Lionel Fdn read:

Even as the majority of states have begun lifting restrictions in recent days, millions of Americans continue to face daunting challenges when it comes to their health, mental and economic well being.

The statement then detailed why they chose to donate to Newark and Chicago relief efforts.

In Newark, which has one of the highest COVID-19 infection rates in the country, senior citizens, low-income families and homeless individuals are facing impossible decisions everyday: whether to buy groceries or pay utility bills, risk eviction or risk crowded shelters. In Chicago, racial disparities are contributing to alarmingly disproportionate rates of infection and death among Black and Brown people. And throughout the U.S., mental health and suicide prevention support providers—particularly those serving children, at-risk students and LGBTQ youth—have seen a dramatic rise in demand for their services.

The list of organizations to receive Rihanna and Jack Dorsey’s relief funds include Child Mind Institute, JED Foundation, Trevor Project, Bright Star Community Outreach, Network’s Crisis Response Fund, Greater Chicago Food Depository, West Side United, Chicago Parks Foundation, Resurrection Project’s, Newark Working Kitchens, La Casa de Don Pedro, and Newark Emergency Services for Families.

Earlier this year (April 10), Rihanna and Dorsey donated $4.2 million to domestic violence programs. They committed $2.1 million each to provide shelter for domestic violence victims and their children for safety during the COVID-19 “stay-at-home” order.

A few days later (April 16), the Fenty Beauty founder partnered with Dorsey and Jay-Z to provide 6.2 million in grants to be distributed across 11 organizations.

A statement on her foundation website said:

“CLF, Twitter & Square CEO Jack Dorsey and JAY-Z’s Shawn Carter Foundation (SCF) released $6.2 million in grants for COVID-19 rapid response efforts in the U.S and abroad. The grants, distributed across eleven organizations, will support efforts that include providing shelter, food and healthcare services to homeless youth in New Orleans, to building virus testing capacity across the Caribbean and to the set-up of ICUs, hospital beds and isolation units in sub-Saharan Africa, among others.”
