Pix & Flix :: Black Girls Rock! & Are Fashionably Fly

Last night (Saturday October 15th), the second annual televised “BLACK GIRLS ROCK!™ 2011? special was recorded. The annual show is dedicated to honoring exceptional women of color around the world who stand as inspirational and positive role models. Founder Beverly Bond, along with BET, executed a show complete with hot celeb appearances, performances and inspirational speeches about just how great black girls and women are.

Actress Tracee Ellis Ross and Regina King hosted for the evening, along with performances by Mary J. Blige, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Melanie Fiona, Mary Mary, Elle Varner and Shirley Caesar. Some of the award recipients included, the first lady of gospel, Shirley Caesar; musician Imani Walker; actor Taraji P. Henson (who gave a teary-eyed speech, when receiving the Star Power award); Laurel Richie Ross, the President of the WNBA; Civil Rights leader, Angela Davis; and actress/singer Tatyana Ali, who received the Young Black and Gifted award.

Celebrities who presented awards included, supermodel Alek Wek, reality star LaLa Anthony, and actress Tichina Arnold. And we can’t forget the wonderful performers. Erykah Badu beat-boxed and sang “Apple Tree.” Jill Scott performed a spoken word piece called “Womanifesto” and sang her hit “Hate On Me”.

Melanie Fiona, Elle Varner, Estelle, and Mary Mary also performed. Mary J. Blige ended the show with her song “My Life.” Here are some pics of the show below.
