Regina King Alters Her Vow To Hire 50 Percent Women In Her Projects To Better Include Non-binary Individuals

Regina King has altered her vow of everything she produces being 50% women in hopes of making Hollywood a more inclusive place. In 2019, American actress/director Regina King accepted a Golden Globe award for her role in the romantic drama film If Beale Street Could Talk. During her acceptance speech, she made a promise to make sure that everything she produces will include 50% women. She said,

“In the next two years, everything that I produce — I am making a vow and it’s going to be tough — to make sure that everything I produce is 50% women.”

Regina King’s first project as a director since making her salient promise is the film One Night in Miami.

One Night in Miami takes place in 1964 and follows a fictionalized meeting between Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown, and Sam Cooke in a Miami hotel room. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2020 and is set to be released via Prime Video on Jan. 15, 2021.

During a recent interview, Regina King revealed that she realized she had to take her promise of hiring 50% women to the next level. She said,

“What we were able to accomplish was that well over 50% of our crew were people that did not identify as cis white male[s].”

She continued and said that everyone doesn’t identify as female or male and it’s crucial that she works on creating a work environment that includes everyone.

“From the moment of me making that proclamation, if you will, to us actually shooting [‘One Night in Miami’] it’s not respectful to regard everything as male or female. So moving forward, as I do still feel having more women in positions behind the camera is important, I have to go beyond that.”

Regina King added,

“[It’s] a challenge I will continue to try to achieve, even as I make adjustments to what that challenge actually is.”
