Georgia Rep. Park Cannon Arrested While Protesting Governor’s Signing Of Voter Restriction Law At State Capitol, Facing 2 Felonies

Park Cannon, a Representative for the State of Georgia, has been released after footage of her getting arrested outside at the governor’s office went viral Thursday (March 25th).

At the time, Gov. Brian Kemp was signing a new bill that imposes restrictions on voters in the state of Georgia.

Some of the new rules include heavier voter identification requirements for those turning in absentee ballots, permission for state officials to oversee local election boards, a limit on the use of ballot drop boxes, a ban on providing voters food and water while they wait in line.

In one clip, Park Cannon is seen outside of Gov. Brian Kemp’s doors, which are closed. She grabs hand sanitizer as a bystander asks,

“Why does she have to step back?”

Another person, who appears to be the one recording, also said,

“The governor is signing a bill that affects all Georgians. Why is he doing it in private and why is he trying to keep elected officials who are representing us out of the process?”

Park Cannon knocks on the door before the police nearby put her hands behind her back and begin arresting her.

In another clip, shared by her attorney Gerald A. Griggs, Park Cannon is being pulled away in handcuffs as she’s heard yelling,

“There is no reason for me to be arrested! I am a legislator!”

She added,

“Do not touch me! Why are there three officers touching me? I am not doing anything! I’m literally not doing anything.”

Georgia State Patrol said in a statement that at 6:33 in the evening, Park Cannon “was beating on the door to the Governor’s Office.”

After she was told to stop, she went to the Governor’s Ceremonial Office doo, which has a sign that reads “Governor’s Staff Only”. She then knocked on that door and was told to stop twice because of the press conference going on inside. The statement continues,

 “Rep. Cannon refused to stop knocking on the door. Rep. Cannon was placed under arrest and escorted out of the Capitol.”

She was taken to Fulton County Jail before getting released shortly after. Park Cannon took to Twitter to thank supporters after her release.

She’s currently facing two felony charges: felony obstruction and preventing or disrupting general assembly session, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by CNN.

It reads she was getting charged after she interrupted General Assembly because she

“knowingly and intentionally did by knocking the governor’s door during session of singing [sic] a bill.”

The felony obstruction charge affidavit said she

“did knowingly and willfully hinder Officer E. Dorval and Officer G. Sanchez of the Capitol PD, a law enforcement officer in the lawful discharge or the officer’s official duties by Use of Threats of Violence, violence to the person of said officer by stomping on LT Langford foot three times during the apprehension and as she was being escorted out of the property. The accused continued on kicking LT Langford with her heels.”
