Tyler Perry Blasts New Georgia Voter Law As ‘Unconstitutional’, Urges Department Of Justice To Step In

Tyler Perry is taking issue with the new voter law in his home state, Georgia.

Gov. Brian Kemp signed the controversial legislation into law earlier this month. It places more restrictions on local voters like limiting the number of ballot drop boxes available and making it unlawful to provide voters in line with food and water.

Rep. Park Cannon was arrested as she protested the law while Brian Kemp was signing it.

Stacey Abrams, who ran for governor against Brian Kemp in 2018 said the law is “a reminder of Georgia’s dark past.”

President Joe Biden has referred to it as the “Jim Crow in the 21st Century.”

Now, Tyler Perry is speaking against it as well.

He told The Hollywood Reporter,

“As a Georgia resident and business owner I’ve been here a few times with the anti-abortion bill and the LGBTQ discrimination bill. They all sent a shockwave through Georgia and the nation but none of them managed to succeed.”

He continued and called for the Department of Justice to evaluate.

“I’m resting my hope in the DOJ taking a hard look at this unconstitutional voter suppression law that harkens to the Jim Crow era.”

He shared his thoughts on some calling for people to boycott the state and added,

“As some consider boycotting, please remember that we did turn Georgia blue and there is a gubernatorial race on the horizon — that’s the beauty of a democracy.”
