DMX’s Hometown Yonkers, NY To Honor Him, Mayor Wants City To Host Late Rapper’s Memorial
DMX’s hometown, Yonkers, NY is considering various ways to salute him just after his passing.
As previously reported, DMX (born Earl Simmons) died Friday (April 9th), a week after having a heart attack in his home.
Insiders close to his family told TMZ that a private and public memorial will be held. Plans will be finalized Monday (April 12th).
In the meantime, Yonkers mayor Mike Spano said he’s all for having the ceremonies at Yonkers Raceway, an outdoor venue that holds 7,500. He added that the family is free to use the property however they need it.
A representative for the venue said no one has put in an official request to have the memorial service there. It hasn’t seen a large group of people due to the COVID-19 pandemic and is currently operating at 25% capacity.
Mayor Spano said even if the memorial is not held in Yonkers, the city wants to recognize DMX and with a statue, a street mural, or possibly naming a street after him. He said ultimately, it’s up to DMX’s family, he just wants to find a way for DMX’s life and legacy to influence others.
DMX’s family confirmed his passing in a statement:
“We are deeply saddened to announce today that our loved one, DMX, birth name of Earl Simmons, passed away at 50-years-old at White Plains Hospital with his family by his side after being placed on life support for the past few days. Earl was a warrior who fought till the very end. He loved his family with all of his heart and we cherish the times we spent with him. Earl’s music inspired countless fans across the world and his iconic legacy will live on forever. We appreciate all of the love and support during this incredibly difficult time. Please respect our privacy as we grieve the loss of our brother, father, uncle and the man the world knew as DMX. We will share information about his memorial service once details are finalized.”
