Derek Chauvin To Be Sentenced In June
The sentencing date for former police officer Derek Chauvin has been set.
As previously reported, Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all counts against him in the murder of George Floyd. He was convicted of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. While the ruling brought a sigh of relief to his family and those who have been fighting against police brutality and systemic racism, his sentencing is also a major factor in getting justice for George Floyd’s family.
CNN has reported that Derek Chauvin is scheduled to be sentenced on June 16th.
Second-degree murder comes with a maximum of 40 years, while the maximum for third-degree murder is 25 years. The maximum for second-degree manslaughter is 10 years and/or a $20,000 penalty.

George Floyd, Derek Chauvin
Since he doesn’t have a criminal history, Derek Chauvin could get 12 1/2 years for the second-degree and third-degree murder charges. A judge has been recommended to give him a sentence anywhere between 10 years and eight months and 15 years for each conviction.
Still, the state wants him to have a harsher sentence than suggested.
For now, Chauvin is in a Minnesota maximum-security prison. A spokesperson for the facility said he is staying in a segregated housing unit due to safety concerns.
It has also been reported that Chauvin, who killed George Floyd after he knelt on his neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, is on suicide watch.
