Barack Obama Criticized Over His 60th Birthday Party By André Leon Talley: They Need To Remember Their Humble Roots
André Leon Talley is slamming Barack Obama over his recent birthday celebration.
This past Saturday (Aug. 14th), The New York Times published an opinion piece on Barack Obama‘s 60th birthday party. As previously reported, Barack Obama celebrated turning 60 by having a lavish party in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. However, he received a large amount of backlash for having the event during COVID-19, and he ultimately decided to downsize his birthday party ahead of the big day. Among those in attendance were Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Erykah Badu, Alicia Keyes, John Legend, and Chrissy Teigen.
However, Barack Obama is continuing to get some backlash for his birthday celebration. The recently published article included a statement by André Leon Talley. The fashion journalist, who is Vogue‘s former creative director and editor-at-large proclaimed:
“I think the nouveaux riches Obamas are seriously tone-deaf. We all love Beyoncé. But people have so many things to worry about with COVID, voting rights, climate warming. People are afraid of being evicted from their homes. And the Obamas are in Marie Antoinette, tacky, let-them-eat-cake mode. They need to remember their humble roots.”
