Gabrielle Union Shares Her Family Was Once Wary Of Dwyane Wade’s Intentions With Her Because Of How Her First Marriage Ended

Gabrielle Union’s family was a bit skeptical of her current husband Dwyane Wade when they first started dating.

Actress Gabrielle Union, 48, and former professional basketball player Dwyane Wade, 39, have been happily married now for seven years. They share one child, 2-year-old Kaavia James Union Wade, together and Dwyane Wade has three other children from previous relationships.

Despite being a well-blended family, Gabrielle Union shared during a recent interview that her family didn’t initially trust Dwyane coming into her life following the end of her first marriage to former NFL player Chris Howard, 46. Gabrielle and Chris Howard married in 2001 and divorced in 2006.

According to Gabrielle, her family worried that Dwyane might take her money if things went south. She said,

“It had happened before. There was some precedent there, otherwise known as my first marriage. Left me a little lighter.”

She continued and pointed out that even though Dwyane Wade makes his own money her first husband was a professional athlete too and she still had to cut him a check after things ended.

“That’s what we were talking about with the first one, too, and then there was a change of fortune. ‘Bring It On’ hit. It led me to, when it was over, I had to write the check. My family really didn’t like it, ’cause it cut into their budget.”

Because of that Gabrielle’s dad was wary of Dwyane when she first introduced them. She said,

“When [my dad] first met Dwyane he was like, ‘What are your intentions? What do you want from my daughter?’”

Gabrielle added,

“[Dwyane was like,] ‘Her love?'”
