Jayda Cheaves Pleads Guilty To Illegally Possessing A Firearm & Ammunition In Jamaica: It Was An Honest Mistake
Jayda Cheaves has officially handled her recent situation in Jamaica!
This past Monday (Sept. 27th), Jayda Cheaves was arrested in Jamaica. Jayda Cheaves–who shares a son with Lil Baby–was visiting the island with friends for her birthday, and she and model Gregory Wright were both detained on firearm charges while preparing to fly back to America.
According to the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF):
“While preparing to depart the island, two persons were found to have been in possession of two 9mm pistols. They reportedly brought the firearms into the country on their private jet when coming into Jamaica. These weapons are licensed to the persons in question in their home countries, but not in Jamaica.”
Yesterday (Wednesday, Sept. 29th), Jayda Cheaves and Gregory Wright pleaded guilty to two counts of illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition. For the ammunition charge, each individual was sentenced to either spend one year in jail or pay $300,000. Regarding the gun charge, both were given the choice between one year behind bars or a $500,000 fine. In Jamaican Dollars, this comes out to $800,000 each–$1.6 million all together. However, when converted to U.S. Dollars, it comes out to approximately $10,700 in total fines.
Jayda Cheaves‘ attorney–Martyn Thomas–issued a statement on the matter, revealing his client brought the gun to Jamaica after being advised to do so:
“[Jayda] was advised they could have travelled to Jamaica with the firearm. [However,] you can’t rely on someone else’s advice, whether it be travel agents or another person. As an individual, with a legal firearm, you have to do your own checks and that’s where she was at fault.”
Once the situation was handled, Jayda thanked her fans for their concern. She also called the ordeal “an honest mistake” and said she still had fun at the end of the day:
“Thank you for all your concerns. We are good and out of court! It was an honest mistake and believe me when I say I learned my lesson. I had a ball out here [insert Jamaican flag emoji] best birthday ever.”
