Mary J. Blige Breaks Down Song Inspired By Having To Pay Ex Lots Of Alimony: I Didn’t Have No Money To Pay My Rent
Mary J. Blige is laying it all on the line as she addresses her split from ex-husband Kendu Isaacs on her latest album.
Over the weekend (Feb. 11) Mary J. Blige, 51, dropped her 14th studio album entitled ‘Good Morning Gorgeous.’ On the 13 track project, the multi-Grammy-Award-winning artist gets personal as she gives listeners a front-row seat into her world. During a recent interview with Angie Martinez, 51, Mary J. Blige dished on her new song ‘Rent Money’ and revealed how it was inspired by her ex-husband, Kendu Isaacs, 53.

She said,
“‘Rent Money’ is about when I first got the divorce – I had to give up all this alimony and I didn’t have no more money to give because he had spent it all.”
She continued,
“So I had to go and, you know, I had to go on tour and make all the money back to pay the alimony and I didn’t have no money to pay my rent and all this other stuff. But it’s also a metaphor, I didn’t have my soul – like, I was just drained of everything. So it was time for somebody to pay.”
She added,
“Sometimes you just feel like somebody gotta pay. And I was very angry then – when I made that song. I was very angry. I was very angry and I was like, ‘rent due. Period.’”

The single ‘Rent Money’ features rapper Dave East, 33, and was released on Jan. 31. In the song, Mary J. Blige sings,
“I spent everything on ya
Spent my energy on ya
Put that loyalty on ya
I ain’t got nothing left
I’m in over my head
Now I’m barely breathing
You know you the reason
Just tryna break even
You must be used to me spending”
She adds,
“Look now my rent money due
I spent everything fuckin’ with you, oh
They say you win some, you win some, you lose
All I got is rent money due
F*cking with you”
This isn’t the first time that Mary J. Blige has shared how her previous marriage negatively impacted her life. As previously reported, during an interview that was released last month, the ‘Just Fine’ songstress alluded to her ex-husband contributing to her self-esteem issues. She said.
“If you’ve been [beaten] down mentally by someone – you’re never pretty enough. You’re never smart enough. Nothing’s ever good enough.”
Mary J. Blige married her then-manager Kendu Isaacs in 2003. In 2016 she filed for divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split. The pair officially divorced in 2018.
