Free-On-A-Technicality :: Buju Banton May Be Released Because of U.S. Blunder

According to the Jamaica Observer reggae artist, Buju Banton (real name Mark Anthony Myrie), may be a free man soon. Banton is currently serving a 10 year drug sentence, but may be released on a technicality/blunder, on behalf of the U.S. government. Allegedly, under the Sixth Amendment (the right to a speedy trial), he should have been brought to trial before 70 days. Apparently, this law (which is way beyond my mental band-width at this point) was created to protect people so that they do not experience unreasonably lengthy incarceration prior to a fair trial. The outlet reports,
Buju Banton’s first trial took place in September 2010, nine months after his initial arrest by law enforcement officials in Florida and four months after Judge James Moody pushed back Buju’s initial court date without giving any specifics regarding why the case was postponed. His second trial, where he was later convicted, took place in February of this year, four months after he was granted bail in the case.
