The Compton rapper’s “We Cry Together,” a six-minute film starring himself and actress Taylour Paige as a quarreling couple, was shown at the Laemmle Royal Theater in West Los Angeles from June 3 through June 9, qualifying it for an Oscar nomination.
Reportedly, pgLang, a creative company recently launched by Kendrick Lamar and his longtime collaborator Dave Free, played one screening of the short film in the main 180-seat theater throughout its six-day run. Lamar and his manager/business partner ensured no cellphone footage of the film would be leaked on social media.

Each screening occurred under the oversight of a special outside security detail that collected the phones of the attendees. Most attendees were family and friends of those associated with the project, but 20 members of the general public were allowed to buy tickets to each showing.
The short film reportedly follows Lamar and Taylour Paige as a couple on the break of a messy, verbally abusive breakup. “We Cry Together” is featured on the 35-year-old musician’s latest album “Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers.”
