Jerrod Carmichael’s Controversial Golden Globes Monologue & Refusal To Take Meeting w/ HFPA President Has Left Her ‘Shocked & Upset,’ Sources Say
Conversations regarding Jerrod Carmichael’s Golden Globes hosting are still floating around.
Specially, members of the awards ceremony’s founding organization, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, are dishing on the HFPA President’s alleged reaction to the show.
As previously reported, viewers everywhere chimed in to give mixed opinions of Jerrod Carmichael’s hosting performance. In his opening speech, the comedian quickly addressed HFPA’s damaging diversity issues brought to light in recent years, acknowledging they didn’t have a single Black member in the organization until after George Floyd was killed in 2020. He stated:
“I’ll tell you why I’m here, I’m here cause I’m Black…This show, the Golden Globe Awards, did not air last year because the Hollywood Foreign Press Association — which I won’t say were a racist organization, but they didn’t have a single Black member until George Floyd died. So, do with that information what you will.”

Carmichael’s joke about being a diversity hire was followed with another, where he claimed to have turned down three meeting requests from the HFPA president Helen Hoehne. Reportedly, Carmichael was supposed to meet with the leader ahead of the January 10th show, but declined several times. The “Rothaniel” star named Hoehne in the speech, and claimed he felt the meeting was “a trap.” According to inside sources, this comment left Hoehne and several others “shocked and upset.”
Reportedly, multiple sources claim that Hoehne had to be consoled by friends following Carmichael’s monologue. One source reportedly stated:
“The whole thing was so awkward and uncomfortable,”
Another added:
“The show needs to be fun, and it didn’t feel fun because of the heaviness of some of the jokes.”
And a third followed up with:
“What did you expect?”
However, it’s important to note that another insider reportedly denied ongoing rumors that Hoehne was emotionally bothered by Carmichael’s statements. The source reportedly stated:
“It’s disappointing and perplexing that people would take this approach to try to hurt Helen. It doesn’t accurately reflect the resilient, positive and effective leader that she is.”
The report also mentioned that the Golden Globes official podcast opted not to speak on Carmichael’s hosting job altogether. Reportedly, one of the show’s hosts stated:
“We’re not going to talk about the host because everybody has their own opinion…We’re just going to skip right on ahead to the rest of the show.”
At this time neither Carmichael’s nor HFPA’s reps have commented on the story.
