Update: Desiigner’s Attorney Says Rapper Won’t Have To Register As Sex Offender For Masturbating On Plane

Update#2: (Sept. 18, 2023): Desiigner’s lawyer is setting the record straight on behalf of the rapper.

As you may recall, recent reports claimed Desiigner, real name Sidney Royel Selby III, was ordered to register as a sex offender after he exposed his genitals and masturbated in front of Delta flight attendants a few months ago.

However, according to Ryan Garry, the rapper’s lawyer, those reports are wrong. In a recently released statement, he said,

“Regarding the issue of Mr. Selby registering as a sex offender, many news outlets have incorrectly stated that he is required to register as an absolute condition of his probation. They are wrong. Since this was a federal misdemeanor, the sentencing judgement states that if the State of California or some other government entity requires that Mr. Selby must register as a sex offender, then he must.”

He added,

“However, the parties in this case have come to the legal conclusion, after significant research and consultation with lawyers in California, that this misdemeanor conviction is not one that will cause Mr. Selby to have to register as a sex offender. If some government agency in California disagrees with our analysis, then we will address the matter at that point in time.”

Desiigner may have avoided one penalty for his actions but, according to reports, in addition to being on probation for two years, he was still sentenced to 120 hours of community service, fined $5,000, and will allegedly have to partake in psychiatric evaluation/drug testing.

Update#1: (Sept. 14, 2023): New details have surfaced in the crazy Desiigner mid-flight masturbation debacle.

As you may recall, earlier this year, it was reported that the 26-year-old exposed his genitals and masturbated in front of Delta flight attendants during a flight back from Japan.

Following the incident, Desiigner pleaded guilty to indecent exposure. He also issued an apology which, in part, stated,

“I will be canceling all of my shows and any obligations until further notice. Mental health is real guys, please pray for me. If you’re not feeling like yourself please get help.”

According to new reports, a judge has ordered Desiigner to register as a sex offender due to his actions. He’ll also have to comply with the other conditions of his 2-year probation, including participating in a psychiatric evaluation and drug testing, performing 120 hours of community service, and not owning any firearms.

Desiigner’s mental health issues led him into legal troubles.

According to reports, Desiigner – real name Sidney Royel Selby III –  is being charged with indecent exposure after he exposed himself on an airplane last week. Authorities alleged that the rapper exposed his genitals and masturbated in front of Delta flight attendants during the flight. Reportedly, staff asked the Brooklyn native on numerous occasions to quit before he was taken to the back of the plane to be monitored by his two friends. A jar of Vaseline fell into the aisle as he attempted to switch seats, according to the FBI affidavit.

As previously reported, Desiigner boarded an international flight arriving back to the States after making stops to perform in Thailand and Tokyo. On Monday (Apr. 17) after the bizarre incident, Minneapolis police approached him upon landing for questioning after a flight attendant reprimanded the artist for his inappropriate behavior. Authorities claimed his excuse for exposing himself was because he  “didn’t really get much … cootie” during his travels and was “brick hard” during the flight. Legal documents also state that Desiigner blamed the flight attendant for his arousal and “kind of showed her, showed her, un, ‘the magic stick.’” for “encouragement.”

Desiigner wasn’t detained after speaking to authorities, however, he took accountability for his actions and checked himself into a facility after believing he wasn’t in the right state of mind during the flight. As previously reported, last Thursday the 25-year-old took to Instagram to issue a statement on behalf of his actions which eventually made headlines. Desiigner revealed that the medication he was prescribed while admitted to a hospital overseas played a role in his actions. He wrote:

“For the past few months I have not been ok, and I have been struggling to come to terms with what is going on.”

The “Panda” artist continued:

“While overseas for a concert I performed at, I had to be admitted into a hospital. I was not thinking clearly. They gave me meds, and I had to hop on a plane home. I am ashamed of my actions that happened on that plane. I landed back in the states and I am admitting myself in a facility to help me.”

He added:

“I will be canceling all of my shows and any obligations until further notice. Mental health is real guys, please pray for me. If you’re not feeling like yourself please get help.”
