US Long Jump Champion Tara Davis-Woodhall Stripped Of National Title After Positive Cannabis Test
US long jumper Tara Davis-Woodhall has been stripped of her national indoor title and suspended for one month after testing positive for cannabis.
On Tuesday (Apr. 25), the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) said Tara Davis-Woodhall, 23, tested positive for THC, a chemical found in cannabis, marijuana and hashish. Reportedly, the positive sample was collected on February 17 after Tara Davis-Woodhall won the long jump title with a 6.99-meter jump at the indoor national championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
As a result, Tara lost her title and was,
“disqualified from all competitive results obtained on and subsequent to February 17, including forfeiture of any medals, points and prizes.”
Tara has already completed her suspension, which began on March 21.
USADA wrote that she was given a reduced three-month suspension because her use of cannabis was not competition-related, and she completed a substance abuse program.
They said,
“Davis-Woodhall’s period of ineligibility was reduced to one month because her use of cannabis occurred out-of-competition and was unrelated to sport performance, and because she successfully completed a substance of abuse treatment program regarding her use of cannabis.”
Cannabis, marijuana, and hashish are considered prohibited substances under World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) rules. According to the USADA’s press release:
“WADA seeks input on each year’s updated version of the Prohibited List. USADA has advocated and will continue to advocate to WADA, the rule maker, to treat marijuana in a fairer and more effective way to identify true in-competition use.”
Tara seemingly addressed the incident by reposting a picture of herself and captioning the post:
“Just Keep Going TDW”
Tara’s penalty follows sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson’s high-profile ban. As previously reported, Sha’Carri Richardson was suspended from Team USA in July 2021 after testing positive for THC. Unfortunately, due to the test results, Sha’Carri Richardson was banned from competition at the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo.
