‘Power Book II: Ghost’ Star Michael Rainey Jr. Says ‘We Knew But Not The Way We Should’ve’ As He Reacts To News The Series Will End With Season 4
As one installment of the ever-growing world of Power opens, another one closes.
Earlier today it was revealed that the second installment of the 50 Cent-produced show, Power Book II: Ghost, will air its 4th and final season later this year.
The series first premiered in 2020 following the mega success of its crime drama predecessor Power, starring Omari Hardwick as James St. Patrick aka Ghost. Starz renewed the show for a 4th season in early 2023. The spinoff follows the son of Hardwick’s character Tariq, portrayed by Michael Rainey Jr., as he navigates the world after losing several of his family members and trying to avoid the legacy of his drug-dealing father. In addition to Michael Rainey Jr., the show stars Mary J. Blige and Method Man. The series previously revealed that Michael Ealy would join the cast for season 4.
Michael Rainey Jr. was seemingly caught off guard by the news the series won’t be returning for season 5. In a deleted post shared to his IG stories obtained by Hollywood Unlocked, the rising actor wrote,
“Don’t ask me nothing idk what’s goin on in them offices lmao they Trippin final season otw tho I guess”
In a follow-up post backing claims from a writer of the series that Starz “didn’t bother to tell anybody on staff” about the cancelation, Michael added,
“my fellow writer said it best. we knew but not the way we should’ve.”
The writer’s full post said,
“ain’t hear from STARZ or Lionsgate once about the show trajectory. literally sat in their faces last month with a pitch and all I kept hearing is how much they adored the work done on Ghost.
adored it so much that they didn’t bother to tell anybody on staff we got canned”
News that the show is ending comes just a day after it was announced that a Power prequel is in the works. As we recently reported, the new addition to the Power Universe titled Origins centers around the characters of Harwick and his onscreen partner in crime Joseph Sikora. An expected release date for the new project has not been reported at this time.
Season 4 is reportedly set to air in two parts, with the first coming on Power’s 10-year-anniversary date June 7, while part two will debut Sept. 6. Producer 50 Cent hasn’t said much about the series’ conclusion drawing near. The media mogul simply shared a teaser for the show with the caption:
“Brace yourself for the final chapter. The two-part final season of #PowerGhost premieres June 7”
President of programming at Starz Kathryn Busby did release a statement about the announcement, however, writing:
“This explosive season of ‘Ghost’ is a fitting crescendo in a decade of an immensely popular franchise – fans will not be disappointed…While this marks the conclusion of one chapter, our commitment to the ‘Power’ universe endures with more compelling storytelling on the horizon.”
