Cardi B Reacts To Backlash After Referencing Her Met Gala Dress Designer As ‘Asian & Everything’: ‘I Was Being Rushed’
Cardi B is setting the record straight regarding remarks made during the Met Gala.
She attended fashion’s biggest night on Monday (May 6) and stunned in an avant-garde creation designed by Sensen Lii for Windowsen. However, Cardi B faced criticism for her oversight of not referring to Sensen Lii by name during a Vogue interview. Instead, she described Sensen Lii as,
“Asian and everything.”
In a short video shared on social media, the Grammy-winning rapper, 31, addressed the incident, citing nerves on the red carpet.
“When I was on the carpet I was very scared … I had a lot of things on my mind, and I was being rushed to the front of the line … When I was getting interviewed, I kind of forgot [how] to pronounce the designer’s name, because his name is a little complicated so I was like ‘damn’, my mind was just racing.”
She continued,
“I think the former director of Vogue, he got offended, because I said ‘Asian designer’. I said ‘Asian designer’ because I know that the designer was Asian … I wasn’t sure what nationality the designer was.”
Cardi then addressed her statements to Gilbert Cheah, the former managing director of Vogue:
“I didn’t say that to be offensive or to get your little speedos in a bunch. The designer and my stylist, we worked really hard for this theme so for you to be kinda of shady because you feel offended or whatever, it just proves why you’re the former director.”
Cardi B responds to Vogue Representative Gilbert Cheah’s comment about her Met Gala look:
“I had a lot of things on my mind. I said Asian designer because I didn’t want to be offensive if I said Chinese. It’s just prove why you’re the former director […] You’re trying to… pic.twitter.com/BAwkk90cpL

Cardi’s post followed remarks by Gilbert Cheah on social media, responding to Cardi B’s description of her dress designer as “Asian and everything.” The former US Vogue representative stated:
“For the record and recognition, and no thanks to Cardi B, the designer of her gown is Sensen Li who’s Chinese. The gown took two months to make. I personally think it’s boring and not even on theme but she chose it and should have at least remembered his name and not just that he’s ‘Asian’”

Cardi B also addressed speculation that the moment could impact her standing at future Met Galas. In response, Cardi says:
“Baby, I’m Cardi B. Stop it.”
