Céline Dion Reveals She Relied On Heavy Doses Of Valium To Cope w/ Stiff-Person Syndrome: ‘It Could Have Been Fatal’
For nearly two decades, Céline Dion grappled with undiagnosed stiff-person syndrome (SPS), facing a multitude of obstacles along the way. In a recent interview with PEOPLE magazine, the renowned music icon candidly recounted the daunting challenges she encountered during her health battle.
Céline Dion mentioned that the symptoms of SPS began appearing in the mid-2000s, resulting in muscle spasms, breathing difficulties, and excruciating “crisis” episodes where her entire body would lock up.

Céline Dion (Larry King Live, 2005)
The 56-year-old singer reflected on her initial experience with a spasm while touring in Germany 20 years ago, which disrupted her vocal exercises and caused intense pain.
Seeking relief, Céline Dion experimented with different remedies and sought advice from medical experts, but found no solution. Subsequently, she turned to prescription medications, such as muscle relaxers like Valium. However, as the medication became less effective, Dion found herself dangerously increasing her dosage.
She stated,
“We started with two milligrams to see if it would help, and then 2.5, and then 3, and 15 and 50.”
She disclosed that at one point, she even consumed 90 milligrams of Valium to endure a performance, unaware of the potentially fatal risks.
In reflecting on the ordeal, Dion recognized the seriousness of her actions, stating,
“It could have been fatal. I did not question the level because I don’t know medicine. I thought it was going to be okay. And you learn — you learn through your mistakes.”
Since receiving her official diagnosis in 2022, Dion has pursued a holistic treatment approach, including medication, immune therapy, vocal therapy, and physical rehabilitation. Despite facing obstacles, she remains optimistic and committed to restoring her health and making a comeback on stage.
