YNW Melly Double Murder Retrial Set To Begin September 2025

The double murder retrial for rapper YNW Melly is finally on the calendar.

After several delays, reports state the 25-year-old’s homicide case is headed to court in September 2025, with a pre-trial meeting for his separate witness tampering case beginning in December of this year.

In case you’re unfamiliar, Florida-based rap star YNW Melly, real name Jamell Demons, stands accused of murdering two of his childhood friends back in 2018. Prosecutors allege that the “Murder On My Mind” artist gunned down his fellow YNW associates,  Chris “YNW Juvy” Thomas and Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams, and set the scene up to look like a drive-by-shooting.

In 2019, YNW Melly was arrested and charged with two counts of premeditated murder in connection to the crimes. After spending 5 years behind bars as the case played out in court, the jury ended in a mistrial as deliberators failed to come to a unanimous verdict regarding the rapper’s innocence or guilt. Prosecutors immediately declared their intention to retry the case, however, drawing criticism from Melly’s fans and family expecting his release following news of a mistrial.

Reports note that getting an official start date for the retrial was held up even further after prosecutors additionally accused Melly of attempting to scare a witness from testifying, adding a witness tampering charge to his list of alleged crimes. Pre-trial discussions for the case are set to begin on December 5th. Should Melly be convicted in his double murder case, he faces the death penalty.

While it doesn’t appear he’s spoken publicly about his retrial date at this time, his mother and lawyer have released statements. His mother stated:

“We are gonna trust God on everything like we’ve been doing. We’re gonna see where it goes. It’s all we can do.”

While his attorney added:

“At this juncture, it is merely a date. We await a ruling from the Fourth DCA [District Court of Appeal] on the suppression motions keeping out the text messages. Once the ruling comes back, Mr. Demons can demand a speedy trial.”
