During a discussion with actress Keke Palmer on her podcast, Baby, This Is Keke Palmer, she brought up actor and filmmaker Justin Simien’s past critiques of Tyler Perry, sparking a broader discussion about the overall criticism of Perry’s films.
Describing his approach to handling the negative chatter, Tyler Perry stated,
“Great, have your opinion… I live from this seat tempered, measured, patient, prayerful, and disciplined… I’m always disciplined about everything. I step back, I count, I watch, I see which way I need to move; I don’t rush into comments.”
Discussing how he disregards the chatter, he added,
“You got to drown all of that out. If you let somebody talk you out of a place that God has put you in, you are going to find yourself in hell. I know for a fact that what I’m doing is exactly what I’m supposed to be doing, because for every critic, I have thousands of emails from people saying, ‘This [movie] changed my life.’”
He concluded,
“Who are you to be able to say which Black story is important or should be told? Get out of here with that bull****.”
Perry’s latest film, Divorce In The Black, has received poor reviews, earning a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Actress Loni Love notably suggested that Tyler Perry should consider hiring directors and writers to enhance the quality of his movies.

Cory Hardrict, the film’s leading man, recently addressed the audience’s criticism, stating,
“It’s the #1 movie in the world … I don’t know nothing about it, I didn’t see that. The people love the movie, and we do it for the the people. If the culture rocking with it, it’s all love.”
He continued,
“Everyone has an opinion and they’re entitled to it, so it’s fine.”
