Ohio Police Officer Turns Himself In After Being Indicted On Murder Charges For Fatal Shooting Of Pregnant 21-Year-Old Ta’kiya Young

An Ohio police officer has turned himself in to face charges after fatally shooting a young pregnant Black woman during a suspected robbery last year.

Reports state officer Connor Grubb was taken into police custody earlier today (Tuesday, August 13th) just moments after a grand jury indicted him on several charges stemming from the murder of Ta’Kiya Young last August.

In case you’re unfamiliar with the story, 21-year-old pregnant Ta’Kiya Young was suspected of shoplifting alcohol from a store when Connor Grubb and a fellow Blendon Township officer approached her vehicle. As Grubb and his partner made Young aware she was under arrest, yelling for her to exit the vehicle, video footage shows Young asking “Are going to shoot me?” before turning her steering wheel and seemingly attempting to leave. Grubb then fires a single bullet through the windshield, fatally striking her in the chest.

The officers claim they attempted to save Young’s life following the shooting, but reported that she was “mortally wounded.” It’s also noted that the newborn daughter Young was carrying died three months after the incident. Grubb was indicted by a Franklin County grand jury on charges of murder, involuntary manslaughter and felonious assault. Executive vice president of the union representing Blendon Township police, Brian Steel, reportedly slammed the indictment, calling it “deeply disappointing” and stating:

“Like all law enforcement officers, Officer Grubb had to make a split-second decision, a reality all too familiar for those who protect our communities,”

Young’s grandmother Nadine Young, who maintains the stance like many others that guns should’ve never been drawn on over such a minor crime in the first place, emphasized how hard Young’s death has been on the family, especially the two sons she’s is remembered by. She stated about Officer Grubb:

“He took a lot from us…Its not fair. We don’t have her or the baby.”

Adding:

“It’s been agony, it’s been like a whirlwind of hurt and pain,”
