John Boyega & Danielle Deadwyler To Portray Soul Singer Otis Redding & His Widow Zelma In Forthcoming Biopic
Actor John Boyega will be the leading man in a forthcoming biopic about late soul singer Otis Redding.
A report from Variety confirmed the 32-year-old was cast to portray the “King of Soul,” with Danielle Deadwyler, 42, being cast to portray Redding’s widow Zelma.
In case you’re unfamiliar, Otis Redding is regarded as one of the best and most impactful singer/songwriters in American history.
Beginning with his first hit single, “These Arms of Mine,” in 1962, Otis Redding quickly gained traction and mainstream attention. From there, he went on to release a number of classic hits such as “Try A Little Tenderness,” “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay,” “Respect” and “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long.”
Redding’s rise to stardom was tragically cut short, however. At just 26 years old, the musician died in a plane crash leaving behind his wife Zelma, and their three young children.
The forthcoming movie, titled “Otis & Zelma” is being produced by Fifth Season, Homegrown Pictures and Kinfolk Management + Media. Per the film’s synopsis, the project will chronicle the singer’s life and “celebrates the 10 short years Otis and Zelma had together, and their eternal love story after his passing.”
