Police Identify 61-Year-Old Woman Fatally Set On Fire In NYC Subway Attack, Suspect Faces First-Degree Murder Charges
The woman tragically set on fire and k*lled on a New York City subway has been identified as 61-year-old Debrina Kawam from Toms River, New Jersey.
Police say the suspect responsible for the horrific act, Sebastian Zapeta, 33, allegedly used a lighter to ignite the fire while Kawam was sleeping inside a subway car at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station in Brooklyn on December 22.

Zapeta has reportedly been charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and arson. Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez emphasized the severity of the charges, stating that first-degree murder could carry a life sentence without parole.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams is advocating for additional federal charges, calling the act “a level of evil that cannot be tolerated.”
Zapeta, who entered the U.S. illegally from Guatemala in 2018, is scheduled for arraignment on January 7.
