Atlanta Airport Experiences Major Delays As Half Of TSA Agents Call Out Amid Icy Weather Conditions
Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport faced significant delays on Tuesday (Jan. 21) and Wednesday (Jan. 22) after half of TSA agents called out due to cold weather conditions.
According to a local news report, a combination of short staffing, anxious travelers trying to get ahead of rare snowstorms impacting southern states, and increased travel due to the MLK holiday resulted in thousands of passengers flooding the busiest airport in the world. The outcome: extraordinarily long check-in lines.
Reporters noted that some TSA agents were forced to stay home because schools were closed over concerns about icy roads.

Airport spokesperson Andy Gobeil addressed the situation in a statement to local news, saying:
“Today was a challenge because of TSA staffing concerns. Our staff stepped in as customer service agents to help… It was the end of a 3-day weekend, we had major events here at the airport—including, of course, the college football playoff and MLK holiday celebrations—plus the threat of weather, so everybody showed up 4-5-6 hours in advance.”
While many TSA staff returned to work by Wednesday afternoon, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens publicly urged the airport to improve its staffing strategies for checkpoint operations. He also hinted at plans to introduce AI technology for a smoother experience in the future.
Additionally, Mayor Dickens expressed interest in relocating the TSA training facility to Atlanta to enhance the airport’s overall efficiency.
