Baby Boy Of Brain-Dead Georgia Nurse Adriana Smith Has Arrived, Family Says He’s ‘Fighting’
Adriana Smith, the metro Atlanta nurse who was declared brain dead in February while eight weeks pregnant, has given birth. According to her mother, April Newkirk, baby Chance was born via emergency C-section on Friday, June 13.
Newkirk told local press,
“He’s expected to be okay. He’s just fighting. We just want prayers for him. Just keep praying for him. He’s here now.”

The family is now preparing to say goodbye to Smith, who has been on life support for nearly four months after suffering blood clots in her brain. “It’s kind of hard, you know,” Newkirk said. “It’s hard to process. I’m her mother. I shouldn’t be burying my daughter. My daughter should be the one burying me.”
Smith’s case drew national attention and reignited debate around Georgia’s abortion law, House Bill 481 (LIFE Act). Her mother said doctors told the family they were required to keep Smith on life support under the law, but state officials have since clarified that it does not mandate life support after brain death.
The family is now raising funds to support both of Smith’s children as they grieve and adjust to life without their mother.
