Smithsonian Removes Trump References From Impeachment Exhibit Amid Pressure From White House
The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History has removed references to Donald Trump’s two impeachments from its presidential exhibit following pressure from the White House.
The exhibit, titled “The American Presidency: A Glorious Burden,” was updated in 2021 to reflect both of Trump’s impeachments.
That temporary label has now been taken down and replaced with content last used in 2008, which only names Andrew Johnson, Bill Clinton, and Richard Nixon.
The change follows an executive order signed by Trump in March 2025, directing the Smithsonian to remove what he called “improper, divisive, or anti-American ideology” from federally funded institutions.
Vice President J.D. Vance was placed in charge of enforcement.
Smithsonian officials say the exhibit will be updated again in the future to reflect all presidential impeachments, but no timeline has been announced.
*Should the White House be involved in decisions about how museums present history?*
