Y’all Agree? Kehlani Calls Out Industry For Overlooking Her Contributions To R&B:
‘It Gets Overlooked’
After quietly surviving multiple shifts in R&B’s sound and industry politics, Kehlani says her decade-long run is still being underestimated.
In a recent conversation with Rolling Stone, the singer opened up about feeling overlooked despite consistently shaping the genre for the past 10 years.
“I contributed a lot to R&B in the last 10 years, and I think it gets overlooked,” Kehlani said. “I’m one of the few that are still remaining from my coming-out time [as an artist], and I think that’s important.”
As they gear up for their fifth studio album, arriving this spring, Kehlani shared that she was “motivated to rewrite” their story.
“To still be able to make splashes like this 10 years in, I think it’s a big deal,” she added.
That momentum was recently underscored by “Folded,” which became Kehlani’s first Top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Reflecting on her fan base, Kehlani said, “These are people that have seen me go from a teenager to a mother.”
