Stacey Abrams Becomes Howard University New Faculty Member As First Chair For Race & Black Politics

Stacey Adrams is a new employee at a private historical Black university! 

According to reports, Stacey Abrams – who served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 2007 to 2017 – has become a faculty member Howard University in Washington, D.C. On Wednesday (Apr. 5) it was announced that the former Democratic leader is set to be the inaugural Ronald W. Walters Endowed Chair for Race and Black Politics on the campus this September. Her responsibilities reportedly include being a leader of research across the university on politics while impacting the Black communities. She will also be joining her co-workers to find a result for these issues.

In a recent press release, Stacey Abrams, 49, reportedly said:

“We are at an inflection point for American and international democracy, and I look forward to engaging Howard University’s extraordinary students in a conversation about where they can influence, shape and direct the critical public policy decisions we face,” Abrams said in the news release. 

Abrams will also be the leader of the Ronald W. Walters Speakers Series – which brings guest speakers on campus to address necessary topics in Black culture. The university’s President, Wayne A.I. Frederick, disclaimed that Abrams‘ spot will honor Walters’ legacy and continue to pass it on among the culture of the campus. Wayne Frederick said:

“Stacey Abrams has proven herself an essential voice and eager participant in protecting American democracy – not just for certain populations, but for everyone with the fundamental right to make their voices heard.”

Walters – scholar and activist – was also a professor at Howard for 25 years before he died in 2010. Abrams — who became the first Black woman to receive a party nomination for the governor in the United States — reportedly said:

“His focus on African American leadership has shaped so much of how we have seen leaders engage over the last 30 years.”

On Wednesday (Apr. 5) Howard University took to Instagram to welcome their newest faculty member to their campus. The caption read:

“We are pleased to welcome Stacey Abrams, Esq. to Howard University as the inaugural Ronald W. Walters Endowed Chair for Race and Black Politics! As the chair, Abrams will foster interdisciplinary collaborations across the University on critical issues of race and Black politics.”
