John Legend On Decade Long Relationship With Kanye, Life As A Married Man
John Legend: We actually worked more together on my last album, Love in the Future, than we worked on any of the previous albums, including Get Lifted. Now our collaboration is more long distance, more sporadic in the sense of timing, but he’s always been great at giving me his creative advice, very unfiltered, as you would expect. [Laughs] You need somebody like that in your life, a few people in your life that aren’t afraid to tell you what they think, because we’re in the business of taste-making.
How has touring changed since you’ve been a married man?
John Legend: Well, once you’re off the market, touring is different. [Laughs] I’ve been off the market since before I got married, but the early part of touring was going out, chasing girls, doing all of that, but once you retire from that game, it’s much more mellow. [Laughs] It’s more relaxing. I get more rest. It’s just more calm, and I’m more focused on being a good artist.
With “All of Me” being written about Chrissy [Teigen], would winning the Grammy for that song mean more than your past victories?
John Legend: “It definitely would mean a lot. That song is very personal. I sang it at my own wedding, and it’s been sung at a lot of other people’s weddings since then. That song is very special to me.”
