Authorities are investigating the death of 40-year-old Terence Crutcher, who reportedly had his hands in the air when he was shot next to his vehicle.

Tulsa Police Chief Chuck Jordan said “there was no gun on the suspect or in the suspect’s vehicle” and promised justice to his family and friends.

According to multiple reports, officers came across Crutcher’s stalled vehicle while they were en route to another call.  Disturbing footage of the moment Crutcher was shot appears to back up his family’s claims that his hands were in the air at all times.

He was first tasered and then shot. He died later in hospital, police said.  Crutcher’s twin sister Tiffany called for protests over his death to be peaceful, and demanded criminal charges be filed against the officer who fatally shot him. Here’s footage of her at a press conference.

D.L. Hughley is the latest celebrity to take to social media to speak out.

Update #2. Tulsa Police spokesperson Jeanne Mackenzie tells reporters,

As they approached the vehicle a black male started towards them. They asked him to show his hands. He refused to follow commands given by the officers. They continued to talk to him. He continued not to listen, not follow any commands as they got closer to the vehicle he reached inside the vehicle and at that time there was a Taser deployment and then a short time later there was one shot fired.

The officer who shot Crutcher has been identified as Betty Shelby. The officer who deployed his Taser was named as Tyler Turnbough.
