Jerrod Carmichael On Opening Up About His Sexuality: “If you’re not going to accept me, I’m cool with that.”

Jerrod Carmichael is being more open and honest than ever. In an interview with the “Breakfast Club’s” Charlamagne tha God, he touched on his comments hinting at his sexuality from his HBO special, “Home Videos.”

In the special, he opened up to his mother about his sexuality in what he calls “a pure conversation.” He told his mother:

“I’ve hooked up with dudes before.”

She responded:

“Well, OK. That’s your option…I like men.”

Jerrod tells Charlemagne that airing that conversation with his mother wasn’t for shock-value. He said:

“I said it. It was a conversation with my mom. I said it, and ‘what else?'”

He confirmed that he actually has had some sort of sexual experience with another man, hinting that it was the first time he expressed his sexuality to his mother. He explained:

“Yeah, and I don’t want that to feel exploitative. ‘Home Videos’ shouldn’t feel that, it’s like we all playin’ and [if] we all naked in this thing – then, we’re all naked in the thing. And it’s my mom, and I was scared to see what she would think of it in that moment.”

Jerrod Carmichael went on to say that he’s okay with the possibility that people may not support him after coming out. He told Charlamagne:

“Here’s the thing: I’m always gonna present things as honest as I can. I just accept that if you’re not gonna accept that – you’re not gonna accept me, you’re not gonna accept my work. I’m cool with that. I’m cool with letting that go. I don’t think that that’s – in any way – a disruption to life, or to career, or to personal relationships that I care about…be free, my n*gga…express what you’re feeling. Be you.”
