R. Kelly — Inmate On Jailed Singer’s Floor Hospitalized For COVID-19, His Legal Counsel Continues To Push For Release
Incarcerated singer R. Kelly and his team of attorneys are persistent in the pursuit of his release. Despite Judge Ann M. Donnelly already denying two motions for R. Kelly to be temporarily freed, a new notice was recently filed to the courts with the proof they’d been betting on: an inmate at Chicago’s Metropolitan Correctional Center was hospitalized and diagnosed with COVID-19 (also known as the coronavirus). That inmate reportedly resides on the same floor as R. Kelly.
According to Inner City Press, the letter to Judge Donnelly from R. Kelly’s team read:
“Dear Judge Donnelly:
On April 20, 2020, counsel for the defendant Robert Kelly filed a letter with the Court indicating that he had been advised the night before that an inmate on the defendant’s floor ‘had tested positive for Covid 19 and been taken to the hospital.'”
His lawyer, Steven Greenberg, hopes that this will convince the courts that the 52-year-old singer’s health is in immediate danger. Reportedly tipped by the director of the federal defender’s office, Steven Greenberg told Judge Donnelly:
“MCC is in the midst of a serious outbreak.”
However, as of last week, Judge Donnelly wasn’t convinced of that fact. She ruled:
“The defendant is currently in custody because of the risks that he will flee or attempt to obstruct, threaten or intimidate prospective witnesses. The defendant has not explained how those risks have changed…he does not explain how his surgical history places him at a higher risk of severe illness.”
Will R. Kelly see a health-related release like disgraced rapper Tekashi 6ix 9ine did?
